Good Ways

Following on from the success of Slow Ways, Good Ways is our new project to share the best active routes for everyone across the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

All the magic will happen on a new app that’s being designed to make it easier for everyone to enjoy Good Ways for walking, running, cycling, wheeling, horse-riding, skating, swimming, paddling, pushchairs and wheelchairs – whatever their ability, interests or needs.

It’s being made possible thanks to our brilliant team and lots of Good Ways Founder Members contributing ideas, wisdom and feedback.

Good Ways is a necessarily super ambitious project that’s full of tough design challenges to get right.

Many websites and apps intentionally avoid designing for people’s different needs, which often includes people with disabilities, fears or special interests. We will not achieve it straight away, but we will do our best to build an app that’s as inclusive as possible.

Someone on challenged me saying that we were “just reinventing the wheel” with the project, which inspired me to sketch out the wheel below. The diagram is a first attempt at showing some of the groups of people who will use Good Ways to create or follow routes on the app.

A circular rainbow “Good Ways Routes Wheel, Version 0.1” diagram showing many possible types, users, purposes and benefits of walking, wheeling, cycling and running routes. The wheel is divided into coloured radial segments, with “walk – run – cycle – wheel” in the centre and examples around the rings, such as family-friendly nature routes, safe-feeling routes, sensory play routes, spiritual routes, active travel routes, routes for commuters, tourists, people with disabilities, schools, charities, councils and community groups.

Good Ways is just getting started.

Each week we’re posting updates and inviting member to contribute to the project and app’s design.

Why not take a look and join in? It would be great to see you on Good Ways.
